40-yr-old man arrested for rape, abortion of 14-yr-old Dalit girl

LUCKNOW: A 14-year-old class IV Dalit girl was subjected to sexual assault and abortion by a butcherman of her father’s age in Gosaiganj.
The miscreant, later, extended an olive branch offering Rs 4-5 lakh cash to strike a truce. The police came to know of the incident only after the family lodged a complaint on Sunday.
The police team arrested the accused, identified as Mohammed Umar (40) aka Gudda of Ansari Ward.He is a butcher by profession.
Police said that the accused ran a shop in the locality and developed a fancy for the girl when he saw her going to school and caught her one day after he saw her all alone.
“It was alleged that Umar forced himself on the girl and threatened her to keep mum about the ordeal she had suffered. “Since the fateful day he used to stop her and took her to some place where he raped her before freeing her. The little girl was under mental duress following the threat given by the rapist and she became pregnant,” said the police.
“When the victim complained about this to the miscreant, he took her to a doctor and got the foetus aborted. The abortion caused the girl to suffer blood loss and this caused her parents to become anxious and they contacted a doctor who revealed the ordeal the girl had suffered,” said SHO, Gosaiganj, Deepak Pandey.
There were reports that the accused offered money ranging between Rs 4-5 lakh to the victim’s family to hush up the case but the same was leaked among the villagers and they resented the approach of reconciliation by the accused.
Later the police came into play and a case was registered in this connection. Kin of the victim also claimed that the men from the side of the accused offered them money to settle the issue.
The sources said the abortion was executed at a private doctor’s clinic in the locality.
Professor Vinita Das, former HOD, department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, KGMU, said, “Exposure to rape violence often leads to trauma, which triggers damaging stress responses that cause both short-term and long-term physical and psychological harm. It has a variety of negative effects, including depression, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, substance use disorders, sleep difficulties, and suicidal thoughts.”
